One hot day this month, my friend Jen and I took our boys, Luke and Quinn to the local County Fair. I love Fairs – they remind me of childhood, of Charlotte’s Web, when Wilbur and his friends are going to the fair, what a big deal it used to be when I was a kid… where else do you get livestock, pies, corn on the cob, rodeos and trucks, cotton candy and quilts? And since I work for the County it only seems fitting that I be supportive, right? Rah rah!

We first ventured through the livestock area – no idea why they put the cattle so close to where the food booths are, but there you go…!

Its so cute how people who live in the city, who aren’t raised around farm animals get such a kick out of looking at them. It doesn’t matter what they were viewing – I think they were silly little piglets – the real treat is the excitement exhibited over something so… ordinary?

The boys were mesmerized by a pig doing tricks … then they brought out a piglet to run the gauntlet for everyone to pet…

We of course had to check out the rides – that was a given. Both boys started out on the swings – one reason I love doing things with other parent’s and their kids – gets me off the hook for having to endure rickety rides that are held together with duck tape …

If you look close, you can see Quinn and Luke  in two of these photos – smiling and looking like they’re having a blast –  Well Luke for sure did, Quinn wasn’t quite as sold but definitely was game to try new things out. Me, these kinds of rides scare me. I thought I was brave enough to go up in the giant ferris wheel. What I forget is that you basically are dangling in the air, and if something fails on you, you’re on your own. And of course they WOULD stop at the top. It looks fairly benign from the ground, even when you get in you don’t realize how scary it’s going to be. The only reason I ventured up there was to get pictures from waaaay up high -

Do you see? Now, that is beautiful and almost worth the fright! Good thing I had Luke to hold onto…

I don’t know if you can see the fear on my face, but those who know me know I giggle a lot when I’m scared, so Jen couldn’t resist getting pictures (since I’m all brave and fearless most of the time lol)

Jen didn’t seem to be phased at all by the height – although Quinn had better sense… either that or I freaked him out so much he became scared after seeing my reaction! Way to go… scare the little kids on the tame rides…

I literally just clung to my camera, seems that helps me not to be scared… I just kept taking pictures, figuring if I look through the viewfinder, it can’t get me right? I pretend I’m just looking through one of those toys you used to buy to look at with the little 3-D picture slides… life is just like that as long as I keep the lens between me and the scary things :)

Like this stuff… OMG people EAT this?!

Luke played a rigged game where he just had to get ONE ball in the bucket to win a $100 team jersey – but of course you never can. Some things are easier than others to just pass by, that was too much for him to resist…

We vowed to return in the evening another night, to experience the fair in the dark and maybe get some shots of the lights…
